Accidents

Every other day we hear news of people falling off from Mumbai local trains or dying while crossing railway tracks. If that's not enough, there are train derailments and accidents at times. While the latter is out of the control of commuters, losing life while crossing tracks / standing at the footboard can be avoided.

On the right track?

On Independence Day itself, two people met with train casualties.  

• 36-year old Abdul Rahim Shaikh fell of a CST-bound train at Dadar... unfortunately he could not be saved. 
• 22-year old Yusuf Shaikh got three of his toes crushed as he too fell on the tracks after his train crossed Dadar station.

While we all know that crossing tracks / travelling on the footboard is dangerous, we tend to do so. At that moment we think we are careful enough, at that moment we think nothing bad will happen... but remember - all those who lost their life / limbs thought the same.

Here's an attempt to list such casualties so that we are constantly aware of what we can face, so that we NEVER make the slightest mistake. After all, it's not the hospital / crematorium we intend to reach by trains, is it?

November 1, 2011: College student dies after hitting railway pole - 17-year old Jaideep lost his life when his head hit a railway pole

October 2, 2011: No Foot to Keep on Footboard - Kadar Shaikh lost his leg while losing grip on the vertical rod at train's footboard.

September 25, 2011: Man loses arm thanks to inhuman commuters, authorities - 45-year old Shivaji Ambavale fell off while trying to board a running train.

Travelling on train's rooftop causes death

Today (12th January 2011), a 25-year-old Mumbai local train commuter Murari Abhiram Chaudhari, got on to the roof of a crowded 8:32am Virar-Borivli train at Nallasopara station. In no time, he was electrocuted.

Worst still, his burning body remained on the roof since nothing could be done to save him until the power supply was stopped.

My deepest condolences to his family.

Again, I urge you all to stop getting on to the rooftops of local trains. It is seriously FATAL.

Don't forget that the lines are using 25,000 volts of alternating current. So earlier electrocution could happens on touching the wires. But now even if you are within 2 metres of the overhead wires, you will be pulled then you know what happens.

When the train did not stop for Roma

She lost her balance on the train when her head hit hard on the tracks. Commuters did pull the chain, but the train never stopped. Poor Roma Talreja, all of 21, lied in an unconscious state on the tracks between Ghansoli and Rabale stations on Friday, 10th December 2010.

But she is not all that unlucky. Fortunately, Baleshwar Mishra saw her fall from an train passing on a Vashi-bound train. The brave-heart jumped off from his train hoping he might be able to save someone's life. He did save her!

But what if it was not for him? Why was the train not stopped after the chain being pulled? All right, the train slowed down and the guard did look around. But what was his calculation? Shouldn't someone have approached the compartment to figure out why was the chain pulled in the first case?

Now while the authorities are continuously warning us to use the FOBs instead of crossing tracks and losing our life, what about the warning (chain-pulling) we give to them when a life is in danger? God bless Baleshwar and make life easier for Mumbai's local train commuters.

Yet another train derails in Mumbai!

I can't believe there was yet another train derailment in Mumbai. Thankfully no one got injured, but let that not make the derailment a "casual" affair. The fact is that derailment happened and that lives were at risk. Now I wonder if the train derailments have only increased over the past few months or is it that we are learning about these incidents only now???

Today (22nd October 2010), a Bhayander to Dadar fast local train derailed between Borivali and Kandivali in the western line. The incident happened at a non-peak hour, at around 4.15 pm as per TOI.
