Samaleshwari Express accident kills one in Orissa

Can't believe after two accidents yesterday, there's a train accident again!

A goods train collided with a passenger train Samaleshwari Express today (23rd November, 2011) at Jharsuguda station, Odisha (earlier Orrisa) killing one person. As many a nine people were injured in the Samaleshwari Express accident.

The trains were running at a slower speed at the time of the incident else it could have been a much bigger accident.

Locals take train to Jan Lokpal Bill

Some local train commuters prefer to fight for a seat.
Some wait until infinity for someone to alight at a station.
Some 'smart' commuters grab the slightest opportunity to force themselves on the seat for which the ever-waiting poor fellow had been standing on his toes all the time!

But on Saturday, August 20 2011, all the commuters had something in common - a hope to bring an end to corruption! After all, some Youngsters from India Against Corruption had boarded the 10.57 am Churchgate bound train to show and gather support for the Jan Lokpal Bill. They rightly called the train Jan Lokpal Express. They circulated leaflets that educated the commuters about the bill as well as the difference between Lokpal Bill and Jan Lokpal Bill.

The mood in the trains was amazing with everyone wanting to join the fight against corruption instead of fighting among themselves for a seat in the train.

Kalka Mail Accident Death Toll Rises

The first reports of the Kalka Mail derailment yesterday mentioned that 20 people are feared dead and around 100 people injured. Who would have guessed by morning the toll will rise to as high as 66! Over 300 are reportedly injured.

Hope care is taken that the injured people get instant treatment and pray no more people are found dead in the debris.

Trains running (crawling) late today

The rains have delayed the trains a lot today. While the local trains were running 15-20 minutes late in the morning, they were crawling at noon. Reportedly, one of the harbour line trains took 45 minutes to reach Kurla station from Chembur! Also, people have been reaching their destination station around an hour late given the long waiting time for the trains to arrive as well as the way they have been moving today.

FOB Delayed, Trains Delayed!

Location: Diva
Date: July 5, 2011
Incident: Protest by Commuters
Demand: To get an FOB constructed on time
Result: Trains delayed, FOB might still not be ready in time!

Commuters who want an important Foot-Over-Bridge (FOB) to be functional by August 31, protested at Diva Junction yesterday leaving the trains delayed in the morning. In the absence of an FOB directly leading to the east side of Diva station, commuters are left with no choice but to cross tracks. Need we mention that this is directly proportional to accidents!

CR officials have reportedly said that due to rains the FOB work cannot be completed until September end!

Safety in trains: HT dedicates a page

Dead bodies, rapes, molestation cases... do we want Mumbai local trains to be known for all this?

While railway authorities are continuously making improvements for the comfort and security of commuters, something seems amiss.

Now, following the gang rape of a girl near Kalyan railway station on June 21 and the other sad incidents in the recent past, HT has dedicated an entire page (page 6, metro) on issues that have been shocking the Mumbai local train commuters.

It's good to see that someone is giving this kind of importance to the safety issues. When once a station master told me that it's tough to have a cop in every single ladies compartment of every train, I  understood that allocating so many resources will be actually too much. But after many months, the incidents have only increased and worsened.

While the authorities find a solution and ensure 100% safety, should we just wait and watch? It's time to be more alert while travelling and take sensible decisions for our own safety.

Here are some tips to travel safe:
  • Don't wait in a secluded spot
  • Don't board empty compartments in very late or early hours
  • Raise an alarm or take necessary steps when you sense trouble
  • Don't hesitate to report any inappropriate behaviour
  • Carry a pepper spray (do let us know where we can find it)
  • Stay on the phone with someone friend / family member when you are travelling very late in an almost empty train, keep them informed about your whereabouts

Explosive device found in train, blast averted

Hundreds of lives were saved today (June 17, 2011) as an explosive device found in Kolkata-Guwahati Kanchenjunga Express and defused in time.

The train reached Guwahati station at its scheduled time early in the morning and Assam police started the the routine frisking of the train. The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was found in a box placed in one of the coaches of the Kolkata-Guwahati Kanchenjunga Express.

Let's all stay alert while travelling in trains and report unidentified objects to the authorities.

Harbour, Central line trains running late

And then people jump from trains!

It rained all night and as always in such situations the trains are running late today (June 11, 2011).

There was water logging on the tracks (4.30 pm update) near Kurla station. Trains in Central as well as Harbour line trains were seen queued up behind each other.

And then people started jumping off the trains. Why? Well with no accurate announcements in the trains, some clueless commuters jumped onto the tracks at Tilak Nagar to reach Kurla station. Others simply wanted to have a clearer view of the situation ahead! I know, you don't find this surprising... yeh toh hamesha ki baat hai. But we must understand that in such situations trains don't run as per schedule and we should not occupy the tracks as it can create unnecessary panic

I urge commuters to stay calm and not jump on tracks as it could be fatal.

Let's take a look at what happened over the last two years as Rain Gods arrived and Train Gods played host:

TV in trains post featured in DNA

I couldn't have asked for more today! Yesterday, the Facebook page of Mumbai Local Trains touched the 100 likes mark and today DNA featured one of the recent articles on the site!

I can't thank Sudakshina enough to inform me about this early in the morning. While my fever topped with ankle sprain brought a definite frown on my face in the morning, her call converted it into a smile! And it gave me the strength to write about all this (alright, brag ;))

So, DNA has shared the entire post TV in Mumbai local trains! What about Video-Coaches? on page 6 of May 23, 2011. And this time, they have given the link of this site unlike the previous time when they accredited a story to a site from where they got the feed :)

Thank you readers for staying aboard! Look forward to more updates, timetables and opinions related to Mumbai local trains on this site.
