Mumbai trains running late as signal panel catches fire

Late last night, the signal panel between Kurla and Vidyavihar caught fire. The fire was brought in control within 30 minutes, but has affected train services badly. Earlier, trains were running over an hour late. Train services were cancelled up to 3.30 am.

10.00 am update: Some of our friends have informed that since many train commuters are travelling by roads, some of the roads and highways are jam-packed. We would suggest that if some people can leave a bit late from home, say after 11.30 am, the congestion could be sorted.

8.40 am update: Central and Harbour line trains running around 35 - 50 minutes late.
Central line commuters are permitted to travel via Mahim-Churchgate route to reach their destination.

Services might be affected for a maximum of three days, as reported by railway authorities.

Mumbai-Pune Pragati Express cancelled.
Mumbai-Pune Singhgad Express cancelled.
Kurla-Manmad Godavari Express cancelled.
Manmad-Kurla Godavari Express cancelled.

Rooftop travel kills 23-year old at Andheri

23-year old Fardeen Muraad Khan died on the spot as he climbed the rooftop of a Churchgate Virar local train on Sunday 18th March, 2012.

It must be noted that Western Railway had recently converted the power mode to a stronger 25000 Volts. This essentially means that anyone coming in contact with these powerful wires will result in horrific death.

I AGAIN URGE COMMUTERS TO STOP TRAVELLING ON ROOFTOPS OF TRAINS.

Also, if you see someone climb the rooftop, PLEASE stop the person as soon as possible and educate about the powerful wires.

On 16th March, a young boy climbed on the rooftop of a train at Elphinstone Road station and suffered 50% burns.

One more dies crossing tracks!

Reports of people dying while crossing tracks are increasing these days. These are read by all those who read newspapers, yet, people continue to cross tracks.

On Monday, a 4-year-old girl was hit by a train (more info) since her family had to cross tracks due to unavailability of a FOB in Mumbra*. Yesterday (22nd February 2012), a 27-year-old man died while crossing tracks near Govandi station. While people and newspapers are complaining (rightfully) about unavailability of helpers, they still continue to cross tracks. Most of them are an educated lot!

Youngsters, especially college students are often spotted avoiding the FOB to reach 'faster'. They realise that it's dangerous, yet they think, "I will be able to reach the other side before any train comes, I am smart enough!" Seldom they realise that the 'other side' might not have a way back.

I offer my condolences to the family of the victim and I understand that if there was no delay in availability of helpers, the man might have been saved.

But seriously, I urge you all not to cross railway tracks. Instead of saving that one minute by avoiding FOB / subway, you can save time by leaving home a minute earlier, spending a minute less in watching the television or waking up on time without putting your alarm on snooze!

Please spread the message and encourage people against crossing tracks.

*Mumbra residents have been demanding a foot over-bridge for a long time.

Parel to get another platform!

Pinch yourself, it's true! Parel might finally get a new platform and end the woes of many commuters who are 'forced' to cross railway tracks at Parel station. How I have struggled in the jam-packed FOB! But this platform will be connected to the foot over-bridge and de-congest the existing bridge.

No Foot to Keep on Footboard

Travelling on footboard of local trains - Avoid if you can
On September 24, 2011, a man lost his arm as he met with an accident while trying to board a running train at Mumbai's Ambernath station .

Yesterday (October 2, 2011), two friends fell off a running local train. While Lala sustained some injuries, Kadar Shaikh lost his leg!

The incident happened between Kurla and Tilak Nagar stations. Apparently, they were standing on the footboard as the train was crowded and Kadar lost his balance.

Yet again we insist:
  • Please do not travel on footboard. Getting late to reach your destination is better than losing limbs / life.
  • Please do not try to board / alight from a running train.
  • Please let commuters alight first.
  • Please do not travel on train's rooftop.
  • Please HELP victims of such accidents.

Woman dies crossing tracks, rescuers lose life too

Yet again, a woman died while crossing tracks. Worse still, two people who tried to save her had to lose their life too!

On Sunday afternoon (19 September, 2011), Sangeeta Ahinkar decided to cross the railway tracks near Badlapur station instead of taking the foot-over-bridge at the same spot. She failed to notice a good train approaching.

Two men, Shivshankar Shrivastav and Dilip Bhawar, passing by the area noticed the risk the woman was taking. They ran to save her but unfortunately a local train started coming from the opposite direction. Impossible to make the right judgment at the moment, the trio were left completely confused. Eventually, all three of them were run over by the goods train.

Please do not cross the tracks. You are not just putting your life at risk but others too

FOB Delayed, Trains Delayed!

Location: Diva
Date: July 5, 2011
Incident: Protest by Commuters
Demand: To get an FOB constructed on time
Result: Trains delayed, FOB might still not be ready in time!

Commuters who want an important Foot-Over-Bridge (FOB) to be functional by August 31, protested at Diva Junction yesterday leaving the trains delayed in the morning. In the absence of an FOB directly leading to the east side of Diva station, commuters are left with no choice but to cross tracks. Need we mention that this is directly proportional to accidents!

CR officials have reportedly said that due to rains the FOB work cannot be completed until September end!
